Similar to English, when you 'appear' or 'look' a certain way, it's less about actively seeing and more how you look to others. The reflexive se signals that the appearance is coming from the subjects themselves.
Te ves muy bien con ese vestido = You look great in that dress
Se ve cansada hoy = She looks tired today

To see yourself in a situation, or in other words, to find yourself in it.
Se vio rodeado de enemigos = He found himself surrounded by enemies
Se vieron en una situación difícil = They found themselves in a difficult situation

When multiple people see themselves, it's reciprocal and better phrased as seeing each other.
Nos vemos mañana = We'll see each other tomorrow
¿Cuándo nos vemos? = When are we meeting up?
