The concept of nothingness and its many everyday uses
Encoding Strategies:
repetition
Nada means nothing — the same word used in casual English ("I got nada").
nada
nothing, anything
No thing at all.
No hay nada en la neveraThere's nothing in the fridge
No sé nada de ese temaI don't know anything about that topic
at all, not at all (adverb)
There is nothing of that quality present.
El examen no fue nada fácilThe exam was not easy at all (nothing easy was in it)
No habla nada despacioHe doesn't speak slowly at all (there's nothing slow in how he speaks)
la nada
nothingness, void, nowhere
When combined with la, it becomes THE nothing, the abstract concept of nonexistence.
El carro apareció de la nadaThe car appeared out of nowhere
Los filósofos debaten el significado de la nadaPhilosophers debate the meaning of nothingness
de nada
you're welcome, don't mention it (response to thanks)
The standard response to gracias — a dismissal of the effort, as if to say it was nothing.
Gracias por tu ayuda. De nadaThank you for your help. You're welcome
nada más
only, just, that's it (quantity)
Used to indicate there is nothing more beyond what was mentioned.
Quedan tres entradas nada másThere are only three tickets left
¿Algo más? No, nada más, graciasAnything else? No, that's it, thanks
as soon as, right after (immediately after)
Used to say that one thing happened immediately after another. Nothing more stands between one event and the next.
Nada más llegar, se puso a trabajarAs soon as he arrived, he got to work
Nada más verla, supe que era ellaRight when I saw her, I knew it was her
para nada
not at all, absolutely not
Used to emphatically deny or negate something. Para says we're moving toward this goal and nada says we haven't moved at all. Explicitly measuring something at zero is more emphatic than just saying no.
¿Te molestó lo que dije? Para nadaDid what I said bother you? Not at all
No me gusta para nada ese planI don't like that plan at all
como si nada
as if nothing happened, without batting an eye, nonchalantly
Describes someone acting completely unbothered, as if whatever just happened is of no consequence whatsoever.
Llegó tarde y entró como si nadaHe arrived late and walked in as if nothing happened
Le dijeron la noticia y reaccionó como si nadaThey told her the news and she reacted without batting an eye (she reacted as if it was nothing)
