Como means as or like and describes the way one thing relates to or resembles another.

When you compare two things by their manner or quality, you say one is like the other.
- Es valiente como su padre = He's brave like his father
- No gano tanto dinero como tú = I don't earn as much money as you

Used to soften or approximate, by saying one thing resembles another without being the same.
- Tardó como una hora = It took about an hour (it took like an hour)

When two things are consistently related together, one thing starts to feel like the cause of the other.
- Como no estabas aquí, tomé la decisión por ti = Since you weren't here, I made the decision for you (as you weren't here, I made the decision for you)
- Como estaba cansada, Lucía se fue a casa = Because she was tired, Lucía went home (as she was tired, Lucía went home)

Makes a comparison to a hypothetical situation or manner that may not be true.
- Siguió como si nada hubiera ocurrido = He went on as if nothing had happened
- Me miró como si estuviera loco = He looked at me as though I were crazy
