Etymology
The Spanish word 'botánica' (meaning 'botany') traces its roots back to Ancient Greek. It started with the Greek word 'botane' (βοτάνη), which meant 'herb' or 'plant'. From this, the Greeks derived 'botanike' (βοτανική), meaning 'botanical science'. This term was then borrowed into Medieval Latin as 'botanica', keeping the same meaning, and finally made its way into Spanish as 'botánica'.
This is a great example of how scientific terminology often preserves its Greek origins across many languages, with very little change in both meaning and form over thousands of years.
Related Spanish Words
Some related Spanish words include 'botón' (button) and 'botica' (pharmacy). While these might seem unrelated at first, they share the same Greek root relating to plants. 'Botica' originally referred to a place where medicinal herbs were stored and prepared, while 'botón' originally referred to a bud of a plant before coming to mean any round, button-like object.
Related English Words
English speakers will recognize many cognates related to 'botánica', including 'botany', 'botanical', and 'botanist'. These all come from the same Greek source. The word 'buttercup' contains the element 'butter-', which surprisingly comes from the same Greek root 'bot-' meaning plant. Even the word 'button' is distantly related, having originally referred to plant buds before evolving to mean the fastening device we know today.
